Reid Asks Senators to Be at Desks Before 1 a.m.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is asking that all Senators be present and at their desks on the Senate floor in advance of Monday morning’s 1 a.m. cloture vote on the manager’s amendment to the $871 billion health care reform package.Reid wants Members to cast the roll-call vote from their desks. The vote is the first of three cloture votes needed before the Senate can move to a vote on final passage, which is expected to occur on Christmas Eve night. The two other cloture votes include one on the substitute amendment and one on the underlying bill itself. The manager’s amendment includes several of the compromises Reid made to secure the vote of all 60 Democrats. The GOP remains unanimously opposed to the bill, and the cloture votes are necessary to overcome their filibuster attempts.
