Nation: Upton, Foxx Take Helm of NRCC Annual Dinner

Reps. Fred Upton (Mich.) and Virginia Foxx (N.C.) are co-hosting the annual fundraising dinner for the National Republican Congressional Committee.

The dinner is scheduled for March 23, but a location has yet to be announced, according to a committee official. Another source familiar with the event’s fundraising said Upton and Foxx have already started dialing for dollars for the committee’s annual fete.

It’s money that the committee needs as it heads into what is expected to be a good cycle for House Republicans. At the end of November, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee had a nearly 3-to-1 cash-on-hand advantage over the NRCC, $15.35 million to $4.35 million.

In 2009, the NRCC and dinner Chairman Peter Roskam (Ill.) claimed to bring in more than $6 million for the annual event. However, that total is typically a combination of several fundraising drives, including the dinner, over the course of several months.

The NRCC traditionally has two major annual donor dinners each year — one in March and one in June hosted jointly with the National Republican Senatorial Committee. However, committee officials together decided last year to discontinue the joint June dinner, making the March dinner the House committee’s sole marquee dinner.
