HOH’s One-Minute Recess: When Voters Start Getting Real

“Real World” alum Sean Duffy isn’t the only ex-MTV star hoping to be elected to Congress this year. Meet Kevin Powell, who appeared on the first season of the reality television mainstay and hopes to defeat Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.) in Tuesday’s primary.

Powell is aiming to be the “first true hip-hop head in Congress,” the New York Daily News reports.

Although Powell is hesitant to talk about his stint on the “Real World” — telling the paper that it’s “irrelevant to my life” — his Hollywood connections have helped him garner support of several stars, including Chris Rock, Marlon Wayans and Bill Bellamy.

But while the Republican Duffy could very well win the Wisconsin seat being vacated by Appropriations Chairman David Obey (D), Powell is considered a long shot to oust the popular Towns. Powell has already run against the Congressman twice and was defeated both times, although he remains hopeful that he can have an effect.

“There is an anti-incumbent spirit in this country,” Powell says. “It’s going to happen here. All I need is 50 [percent] plus one.”
