Here’s a tip for new Members of Congress: Don’t do anything to make New York Yankees fans mad. They’ll totally call you out on it.

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy voiced her support for a bill honoring the late Yankees announcer Bob Sheppard on the House floor Tuesday. During her speech, the New York Democrat noted Sheppard’s voice will live on in shortstop Derek Jeter’s recorded introduction.

Only McCarthy pronounced Jeter as “Jet-ter.” That led more than a few Yankees fans — who have the reputation for being the most polite fans in baseball, cough, cough — to point out McCarthy’s mistake.

McCarthy apologized for the flub, telling HOH she “meant no disrespect.” She adds that she suffers from dyslexia, which causes her to occasionally mispronounce words.

“As part of my role on the Education and Labor Committee, I have worked to further our understanding of reading and language process difficulties, including dyslexia,” McCarthy quips. “‘Jeter’ is actually the French word for ‘throw.’ I should at least get some brownie points for that.”
