HOH’s One-Minute Recess: Parade of Tax Lobbyists

It seems that every lobbying interest in the country had a response to the State of the Union address, but none quite as creative as John Kelly’s.

Kelly, a tax lobbyist with Cornerstone Government Affairs, found himself inspired when President Barack Obama said, “Over the years, a parade of lobbyists has rigged the tax code to benefit particular companies and industries.”

He decided Wednesday to start a closed Facebook group called, what else, Parade of Tax Lobbyists.

“You know who you are! Let’s have a parade! Or a beer!” the Facebook page states. “No purpose to this group other than to have a little fun.”

Already the group has more than 40 members, including Jeff MacKinnon of Ryan, MacKinnon, Vasapoli and Berzok; Van Scoyoc Associates’ Jeff Trinca; Capitol Counsel’s John Raffaelli; Jimmy Williams of SNR Denton; and Dena Battle of the National Association of Manufacturers, among others.

“We e-mailed or Facebooked back and forth with some funny quips and a couple of us thought, ‘Let’s just start a page with no real reason and invite friends who happen to be tax lobbyists,’” Kelly said. “Maybe at some point we’ll get together to share information or share jokes. … We appreciate the president shining a light on our profession.”
