Heard on the Hill: Choo-Choo Charlie

Forget the bus. Despite his financial woes, Rep. Charlie Rangel opts to travel from New York City to Washington, D.C., via the pricey Amtrak train.

A tipster tells us that the New York Democrat was riding in style in the first-class car Monday morning, decked out in his trademark pinstripe suit.

In addition, Rangel was spotted hanging out in the Acela Lounge at Penn Station prior to boarding the train.

“He did a bit of glad-handing there,” our spy says, adding that a porter allowed him to board before the crowd. “Typical for Members of Congress and old people, and he fits both.”

Rangel passed the time by munching on a toasted bagel with cream cheese and perusing the New York Times. In fact, he was even seen tearing out an article from the paper, although it wasn’t clear what was worth the extra attention.
