HOH’s One-Minute Recess: Let’s Hope It’s Not the Congressional Record

Once a week, Sen. Tom Harkin takes time out of his busy schedule to visit a public elementary school on Capitol Hill where he helps a young student learn to read.

All together now: Awww!

The Iowa Democrat is a volunteer for the Everybody Wins program and will be recognized Tuesday night at the program’s annual gala.

Everybody Wins pairs young students with reading mentors who spend an hour a week reading with the student. More than 100 Congressional staffers work with the program each year.

Harkin won’t be the only VIP volunteer on hand Tuesday. Transportation Secretary and former Rep. Ray LaHood (R-Ill.) will also attend. LaHood volunteered with the program during his time on Capitol Hill.
