Sharron Angle has taken herself out of the running for Nevada’s 2nd district special election, for which candidate filing began Wednesday.

“I do not have any desire to participate in a process described by others as a ‘ballot royale’ or a situation where the party central committees choose their nominees because it makes a mockery of the most important constitutional element in exercising freedom,” she said in a statement that left open the possibility of running for the seat next year.

While Angle ended her candidacy, several others filed their candidacy papers with the secretary of state. Republicans Mark Amodei and Greg Brower and Democrat Kate Marshall were among a group of candidates that is expected to grow, as the filing deadline is not until June 30.

However, the state Supreme Court is getting set to hear the state’s argument against a lower court’s ruling that the parties can select their nominees for the Sept. 13 contest. Secretary of State Ross Miller (D) had previously announced that the special election would be open to any and all candidates to run on any party line they please.

Republicans challenged that interpretation of the law and won, but the state appealed that decision to the state Supreme Court.
