Cantor Will Bring Up Balanced Budget Amendment

The House will take up a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution as lawmakers struggle to cut a deal for increasing the nation’s debt limit, Majority Leader Eric Cantor announced Thursday.

“One option to ensure that we begin to get our fiscal house in order is a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution, and I expect to schedule such a measure during the week of July 25th,” the Virginia Republican said in a statement released by his office.

“I have no doubt that my Republican colleagues will overwhelmingly support this common sense measure and I urge Democrats to as well in order to get our fiscal house in order,” he added.

The balanced budget amendment has been a popular proposal among conservative Republicans, but moderates and veteran lawmakers largely view it as little more than a political stunt because of the inherent difficulty of the ratification process.

The measure is sponsored by Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.).
