Joyce Beatty Latest Democrat to Join Ohio 3rd District Race

Former state House Democratic Leader Joyce Beatty joined the race for Ohio’s newly drawn 3rd district last week.

“With Washington such a mess and so much at stake, I’ve decided the best way to make a difference now is to run for Congress,” Beatty says in a new radio advertisement for her campaign.

Beatty joins former Rep. Mary Jo Kilroy and state Rep. Ted Celeste in the Democratic-leaning district.

Ex-Ohio Democratic Party Chairman David Leland was considering a bid but told Roll Call on Monday he will not run.

Earlier this year, Ohio Republicans drew the new 3rd district anchored in Columbus as a means to shore up GOP Members in neighboring districts.

State lawmakers continue to suggest additional changes to the Congressional map, but a source said none of them drastically affect the 3rd district. Lawmakers have until Wednesday to make any changes.
