The first competitive Democratic candidate jumped into the race against Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) today.

Bucks County attorney Kathryn Boockvar will challenge Fitzpatrick in one of the Keystone State’s remaining competitive districts after Republicans redrew the Congressional map last month.

“I pledge that I will spend every day working for the people of Bucks and Montgomery County, and will never let partisan politics get in the way of doing what’s right for the families that depend on us,” Boockvar said in a statement.

Pennsylvania Republicans revised the Congressional map in December. The state lost a House seat in reapportionment as a result of lagging population growth compared with other states. In their redraw, Republicans shored up most of their vulnerable GOP Members in competitive districts, but they kept Fitzpatrick’s district mostly intact.

As a result, Fitzpatrick will be the only Pennsylvania Republican to seek re-election in a district that Democrats carried in the 2004 and 2008 presidential races. President Barack Obama won the district as it is currently drawn with 54 percent in 2008.

The district has a history of changing party hands. Fitzpatrick originally won that southeastern seat in 2004 but lost re-election two years later to now-former-Rep. Patrick Murphy (D). He won back the seat in 2010 by defeating Murphy.

So far, Boockvar doesn’t have any significant primary competition. Democratic officials said they don’t expect any other candidates to enter the field before the Feb. 24 filing deadline.
