New York: Gillibrand Pitches for Hochul, Slaughter
Popular Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand made an email fundraising pitch to her supporters Sunday for Democratic Reps. Kathy Hochul and Louise Slaughter.
“The final New York redistricting maps are out and two of my dear friends — and more importantly, two inspiring women leaders — have been declared top targets of the National Republican Congressional Committee,” Gillibrand wrote. “I need Kathy Hochul and Louise Slaughter by my side in Congress, fighting for New York and our common values.” She asked her supporters to give money to both of the incumbents.
In a court-drawn redistricting map, Hochul’s seat went from one that voted 52 percent for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in 2008’s presidential election to one that would have voted 54 percent for the nominee, making her campaign for her first full term an uphill one. Hochul won an upset special election victory in her upstate district last year and has become a favorite of Democrats in Washington, D.C.
Slaughter saw her district grow about 10 points more Republican, but it still would have voted for Barack Obama in 2008. She faces likely GOP nominee Maggie Brooks, the Monroe County executive.
Gillibrand, a former House Member from upstate, also tweeted Monday asking her followers to donate to Hochul’s and Slaughter’s campaigns.
