Benghazi, Benghazi, Benghazi: Pelosi Dismisses Email as GOP ‘Subterfuge’
Asked by reporters more than once about revelations that the White House withheld certain documents from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee after the panel subpoenaed all relevant emails on the matter, the California Democrat threw up her hands.
“Diversion, subterfuge. Benghazi, Benghazi, Benghazi. Why aren’t we talking about something else?” Pelosi asked. “If you all want to sit around and talk about Benghazi, you can sit around and talk about Benghazi,” she said in her closing remarks. “The fact is that’s a subterfuge and they don’t want to talk about jobs, growth, immigration reform, voting rights, you name it.”
The GOP has reignited its call for answers on the Benghazi attack after an email surfaced as a result of a Freedom of Information Act request by the conservative group Judicial Watch. The correspondence implicates a White House official with suggesting that the Obama administration underplay the extent to which it was responsible for the incident.
The email has become new ammunition for Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., as he leads the ongoing investigation into the incident that Democrats say has become nothing more than a partisan distraction from real issues.
But Issa has more than enough support from GOP leadership to buoy his efforts.
“For nearly two years, Congress and the American people have sought answers to important questions surrounding the attack on our mission in Benghazi,” Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., said in a statement on Wednesday. “For nearly two years the White House has sought to avoid answering those questions. Now we know why it required a court order to finally force the White House to respond to those inquiries. The email from Ben Rhodes demonstrates the Obama Administration from the beginning misled Congress, the media and most importantly, the American people.”
