A national political party has filed suit against the Federal Election Commission seeking to knock out the current contribution limits on what an individual may contribute to the party for independent expenditures.

Republican National Committee, the Republican Party of Louisiana and its chairman, and two local party committees filed suit today against the Federal Election Commission (FEC) claiming the committees have the first amendment right to set up non-contribution accounts, to raise unlimited amounts from individuals, and spend them on independent federal election activity.

An individual may only contribute, in a calendar year, $32,400 to a national party committee, and $10,000 to a state or local party committee. Individuals may give an unlimited amount to non-party Super PACs who only make independent expenditures. The suit asks for political parties to be treated equally under the law.

The suit claimed the controlling legal principle should be the Supreme Court’s holding that “independent expenditures…do not give rise to corruption or to the appearance of corruption.
