Dirksen Evacuated for Bomb Threat (Updated) (Video)

Updated 1:29 p.m. | Capitol Police have reopened several floors of the Dirksen Senate Office Building Tuesday after investigating a bomb threat.
“The USCP received a phone call reporting a suspicious package in room SD-340 in the Dirksen Senate Office Building (DSOB),” police said in an email distributed just after 12:30 p.m. “Several floors in the DSOB have been evacuated as a precaution while the USCP continues to investigate.” Floors 2, 3 and 4 of Dirksen were closed to staff and visitors, according to officers at the door of the first floor, who continued to screen visitors and staff entering the building.
Visitors to the building continued to ride the elevators up to the restricted floors. On the fourth floor, a police officer standing in the hallway informed people that the corridor adjacent to C Street Northeast was “shut down” on floors 2 through 4 of the Dirksen building.
Officers were simultaneously investigating a bag they deemed “suspicious” in the Russell Senate Office Building courtyard. It was actually an unattended lunch cooler, police later confirmed.
Capitol Police spokeswoman Lt. Kimberly Schneider gave the “all clear” just after 1:20 p.m., announcing that officers had completed their investigation of SD-340.
The partial evacuation interrupted a hearing into the Transportation Security Administration.
