A Valentine for Erma

On May 29, 1937, Robert Byrd married his childhood sweetheart, a coal miner’s daughter named Erma Ora James. Byrd, who would become the longest-serving Senator in history, would often deliver poetic odes to his wife on the Senate floor. On this Valentine’s Day, Roll Call brings you some of our favorites.
