McConnell: Government Shutdown Will Not Defund Planned Parenthood

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Wednesday sought to quell calls from some conservatives to attach a rider defunding Planned Parenthood to a short-term funding bill, asserting it would be an “exercise in futility” given the majority of the organization’s funding comes from non-discretionary government spending.“If you shut down the government you will not defund Planned Parenthood. It will not happen,” McConnell said. “… We’re not going to engage in exercises in futility. We’ve already voted one time in the Senate to try to defund Planned Parenthood, we know the president wouldn’t sign such a bill, so it will not succeed.”
