Politicians don’t usually stop supporters from chanting their names but on Thursday, Sen. Bernie Sanders stopped supporters from shouts of “Bernie! Bernie!” at a rally in Washington.

He wanted them to know the movement, born out of his ultimately unsuccessful campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, was more than just about him.

“I appreciate your love and it is mutual,” the Vermont independent said. “It is all of us.”

Sanders was the main speaker at the rally celebrating the death of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which Sanders has long opposed.

The senator used the rally to explain that after the heavy Democratic losses on Election Day, it’s time to change course.

“When you lose the White House to the least popular candidate in the history of America,” Sanders said. “When you lose the Senate, when you lose the House and when two-thirds of governors of this country are Republicans, it is time for a new direction for the Democratic Party.”

Sanders, appearing with Democratic Reps. Rosa DeLauro and Tulsi Gabbard, reiterated his support for Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison as the next Democratic National Committee chairman, and said the party needed to do a better job reaching working-class voters. 

“I have not the slightest doubt that millions of people voted for Donald Trump, despite their understanding that he is a racist and a sexist,” Sanders said, adding that they still voted for him because they thought Trump would challenge the establishment.

“Well, the truth is, as all of you know, Donald Trump is not going to stand up to the establishment. We are going to stand up to the establishment,” he said.
