Bustos Slams Green Over Trump Impeachment Vote
Says it hurts Democratic members in districts like hers that voted for Trump
Illinois Rep. Cheri Bustos criticized fellow Democratic Rep. Al Green of Texas for forcing a vote on impeaching President Donald Trump, saying it endangers Democrats like her.
Speaking on CNN’s Axe Files podcast with former Obama adviser David Axelrod, Bustos called the vote “a terrible plan.”
“I was very disappointed that it got to the point where we had to vote on impeaching the president at a time where we’ve got an investigation going on that’s continuing rather than,” she said.
Last month, the House overwhelmingly voted against Green’s resolution on impeachment, with many Democrats voting against the resolution.
Illinois’ 17th District, which Bustos represents, is one of 12 districts that elected a Democratic representative but voted for Trump, according to liberal website the Daily Kos.
“That’s self-inflicted damage in congressional districts like mine and the ones we need to do well in,” she said.
Bustos also said her team had conducted polling in her district that shows Trump’s popularity ratings are not “underwater.”
“People are still willing to give him a shot,” she said. “The only way I can get something done is to work across the aisle and have ideas I can get my friends on the Republican side to be agreeable with me on.”
In the past, Bustos has said that most of her constituents do not ask her about Russia, but rather the focus on her district has been about health care.
