NRCC Launches Digital Ads Targeting Democrats After Shutdown
Facebook ads take aim at 10 Democrats
The National Republican Congressional Committee wants to make sure Democrats don’t forget the three-day government shutdown. The group launched digital ads Tuesday that target 10 House Democratic members.
The ads, which will run on Facebook for one week, are part of a “five-figure buy,” according to details provided first to Roll Call. Five of the Democratic targets represent districts that President Donald Trump carried in 2016.
In the 15-second video, a narrator links the Democrat to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
“Dave Loebsack voted to shut down the government and block children’s health care,” the video’s narrator says of the Iowa Democrat whose district backed Trump by 4 points. “Tell Dave Loebsack and Nancy Pelosi to stop the partisanship and end the dysfunction.”
Each of the targeted Democrats voted last Thursday against a four-week continuing resolution and a six-year extension of the Children’s Health Insurance Program, ahead of a Friday deadline to fund the government.
But seven of the 10 lawmakers did vote to reopen the government Monday, following a breakthrough in the Senate. The only three targeted Democrats who voted against both stopgap measures were Reps. Scott Peters of California, Dan Kildee of Michigan and Sean Patrick Maloney of New York.
The other Democrats targeted by the Facebook ads are Reps. Tom O’Halleran of Arizona, Ami Bera and Raul Ruiz of California, William Keating of Massachusetts, Rick Nolan of Minnesota, and Matt Cartwright of Pennsylvania.
Trump carried Maloney’s 18th District by 2 points, O’Halleran’s 1st District by 1 point, Nolan’s 8th District by 16 points and Cartwright’s 17th District by 10 points. His losing margins in Kildee and Ruiz’s districts were in the single digits.
All 10 Democrats are NRCC targets this cycle. The ads launched Tuesday mirror 25-second videos that the committee released last Friday, urging the same 10 Democrats to fund the government.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee also launched digital ads during the shutdown. The DCCC targeted 50 GOP-held seats, a handful of which are open. The ads featured an image of the Capitol with the text, “Tell Washington Republicans: Save American Jobs. End the Shutdown.”
