Sen. Ted Cruz’s Democratic challenger Rep. Beto O’Rourke raised more than double the amount the Republican incumbent raised in the second quarter of 2018.

O’Rourke’s campaign announced he raised $10.4 million in the most recent fundraising quarter from 215,714 individual contributions. 

“This campaign is proving every single day that going everywhere, fighting for everyone and running without PACs or special interests isn’t just the right thing to do, but the best way to win,” O’Rourke said in a campaign email.

O’Rourke’s campaign said it has $14 million in cash on hand.

Cruz will announce his campaign raised $4 million in the second quarter and had $10 million in the bank, a Cruz source told The Washington Examiner.

O’Rourke has consistently outraised Cruz, taking in $6.7 million in the first quarter of 2018 compared to Cruz’s $3.2 million.

Cruz’s fundraising numbers come as the Houston Chronicle reported late last month that the Federal Election Commission informed Cruz’s campaign on three different occasions that he had taken more money from individual donors than is legally permitted.

The two candidates have also made the Trump administration’s family separation policy a central part of their campaigns.

 O’Rourke visited detention facilities, and Cruz proposed legislation to keep families together while in detention.

Despite O’Rourke’s impressive fundraising, Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales rates the race as Likely Republican.
