House Democratic staffers last week likely noticed some big changes to their internal communication and legislative tracking tool, DemCom, which was re-released with significant changes.

The intranet is not available to the public, but is used regularly by thousands of Democratic staffers in the House.

“DemCom serves as a model for what is possible when we use the latest web technologies to increase efficiency and promote greater transparency,” Minority Whip Steny H. Hoyer, D-Md., in a statement about the revamp.

Improved mobile access to DemCom is one of the key upgrades. It was redesigned with a language that ensures the site is optimized for mobile and access is now secure on mobile devices. When using the House-provided AirWatch browser on any House-connected iOS or Android device, Democratic staff can now access the full DemCom intranet, according to a release from Hoyer’s office.

Emails to the list of legislative directors are now automatically posted to DemCom and organized by office and bill. Staff turnover and limited email capacity on House networks meant that many staff were missing key information moving through that email list.

Existing features have also been updated, according to Hoyer’s office. Pages will load faster, due to the updated coding and the staff directory is updated weekly, including what issues staff cover.

While much of this information is out of reach for the public, the WhipWatch app from Hoyer’s office includes much of the public information that is available on DemCom, including floor schedules, votes and job openings.
