The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for an attack in Tajikistan that killed Washingtonians Lauren Geoghegan and Jay Austin.

Geoghegan, 29, interned for Rep. Adam Schiff when she was in college at Georgetown University, NPR reported. 

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Lauren Geoghegan who was killed along with her partner, Jay Austin, and two others while bicycling in Tajikistan on Sunday in a senseless act of terrorist violence,” the California Democrat said in a statement.

The House Intelligence ranking member said Geoghegan, who grew up in California, interned in both his district and D.C. offices.

“It was clear at that time and in the life she led since, she was an uncommonly intelligent, caring, and adventurous young woman,” the congressman said. “I have been in contact with State Department, and am committed to doing everything I can to assist her family in this time of grief, and to honor Lauren’s life and legacy. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones.”

Geoghegan more recently worked in Georgetown’s admissions office, and Austin worked for the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The couple had quit their jobs to travel the world. They had been on the road for a year by the time of Sunday’s attack, according to NPR.

A car swerved and hit a group of seven bicyclists, then assailants jumped from the car to stab them. Four of the bicyclists, including Geoghegan and Austin, died.
