Democrat Nancy Soderberg and Republican Michael Waltz were essentially tied in a poll commissioned by the Democrat’s campaign in an open Florida district that President Donald Trump carried by double digits.

Waltz led Soderberg 47 percent to 46 percent in the 6th District poll, shared first with Roll Call. Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research surveyed 400 likely voters from Sept. 4-6, with 31 percent reached by cell phone. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee added Soderberg, a former United Nations ambassador during the Clinton administration, to its Red to Blue program for strong recruits in March and she easily won the Democratic nomination last month. Waltz, an Afghan war veteran and onetime aide to former Vice President Dick Cheney, beat two other Republicans to secure the GOP nod.

Soderberg outraised Waltz before the Aug. 28 primary and ended the pre-primary reporting period with more than $1 million in the bank to Waltz’s $287,000.

The 6th has in recent years been a reliably GOP district. It backed both Republican incumbent Ron DeSantis, who is running for governor, and President Donald Trump by 17 points in 2016. But former President Barack Obama narrowly carried the district under its current lines in 2008.

Forty-six percent of likely voters in the poll had a favorable view of Trump compared to 51 percent who held an unfavorable view.
