Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and the most likely next speaker of the House are not strangers.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and McConnell have had to work together over the years, as long-tenured leaders of their respective conferences. And McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, noted their history goes back many years before that.

“She and I actually have had some — an opportunity to work together for a number of years when we were both on the Appropriations Committee,” McConnell said. “She had the Foreign Operations subcommittee and so did I, and so we’re not unfamiliar with each other.”

That should give a clue that McConnell and Pelosi will continue to prioritize getting a functioning appropriations process along with President Donald Trump. McConnell put finishing up the fiscal 2019 spending bills and a House-Senate agreement on the farm bill on the top of the “lame duck” legislating list.

McConnell said Tuesday that he had already spoken to Nancy Pelosi about working together on infrastructure, as well.

“When we do things together, it almost never makes any news,” McConnell said. “There are plenty of things we work together on, and I always have to tell constituents who think we all hate each other, that the Senate’s a pretty collegial place.”

As for the Senate, McConnell confirmed the obvious that with his new larger majority and a GOP-led House he will continue to prioritize the confirmation of Trump’s judicial nominations.
