And then there were 30.  

Sen. Thomas R. Carper, D-Del., became the 30th member of the Senate Democratic caucus to endorse the Iran deal late Thursday night.  

Carper made his endorsement of the international nuclear agreement with Iran about nuclear development in an opinion piece prepared for publication Friday in The News Journal of Delaware.  

“America and our five negotiating partners … have reached an historic agreement with Iran to end their pursuit of nuclear weapons for years and, maybe, forever,” Carper said in the opinion piece, according to a News Journal report  posted after midnight. “I still have serious doubts about their government. So does the Obama administration, for that matter. That’s why this deal is based on mistrust. If some future Iranian regime decides to violate the agreement, we’ll know it.”  

Carper’s colleague Sen. Chris Coons, a fellow Democrat, is planning to make his own announcement about the Iran agreement during a Sept. 1 speech on the campus of the University of Delaware in Newark. The writing is on the wall that a veto of a resolution of disapproval would survive an override attempt.  

The question has shifted to whether 41 senators will oppose limiting debate on the legislation itself, preventing it from even moving out of the Senate. The disapproval measure faces the usual procedural hurdles in the Senate, meaning it will require 60 votes to get to President Barack Obama’s desk.
