Trump Super PAC Goes After Michigan Democrat Challenging Bishop
America First is spending against Elissa Slotkin in the 8th District
America First Action, a super PAC aligned with President Donald Trump, is launching an attack ad against Democrat Elissa Slotkin, who’s challenging GOP Rep. Mike Bishop in Michigan’s 8th District.
The spot, obtained first by Roll Call, knocks the former acting assistant secretary of Defense for her time in Washington during the Obama administration. The ad will run on broadcast and cable, beginning Tuesday through Oct. 9.
The pro-Trump outside group has committed to spending $854,000 in the Lansing-anchored district to help Bishop win a third term. It also has plans to send out three pieces of direct mail. Along with its nonprofit affiliate, America First Policies, the super PAC announced last month it’d be spending $12.5 million on the midterms, mostly in House districts that Trump won in 2016.
Michigan’s 8th District backed Trump by 7 points, while Bishop won re-election by 17 points. Slotkin has proved a prolific fundraiser, ending the second quarter ended June 30 with $2.4 million in the bank to Bishop’s $1.7 million. She worked in defense and intelligence under both the Obama and George W. Bush administrations.
