President Donald Trump and Rod Rosenstein to Discuss DOJ Official’s Future Monday
Meeting was delayed by contentious Kavanaugh hearing
Updated 12:19 p.m. | Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and President Donald Trump were expected to discuss the Justice Department official’s future during the president’s trip to Orlando on Monday.
Trump told reporters the deputy AG was waiting on the presidential jet as he left the White House for remarks in Florida to law enforcement officials. He also signaled he did not plan to terminate Rosenstein on Monday.
“No, I don’t. No,” he replied when asked if he has plans to fire the deputy attorney general.
Rosenstein and Trump delayed a planned one-on-one meeting until Monday to allow Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s contentious confirmation process to play out. The Justice Department official, according to the New York Times, last year discussed recording Trump with the goal of triggering his removal under the 25th Amendment. Rosenstein denies the report.
Trump told reporters he and Rosenstein did not know each other well when the president tapped him to be he No. 2 Justice official. “I get along very well with him,” Trump said Monday.
Democratic members — and a shrinking list of Republicans — cute Rosenstein’s management of the department’s Russia election meddling probe to warn firing him would create a “constitutional crisis.” But Trump recently said he would prefer keeping Rosenstein in the job.
