The 116th Congress will officially gavel in on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019.  The following day, the House will be in and the Senate out — the only day this will occur in 2019.

Throughout the year, the Republican-controlled Senate is scheduled to be in session more days than their colleagues in the Democrat-led House. In a change from previous years, lawmakers in both chambers will have a two-week recess beginning at the end of September.
